Life in a Spanish village

You know you're in trouble when your wife says: "I am sick camping!" She referred to our House unusual toilet regulations. We had settled into a new House, an old apartment in a picturesque village in southern Spain.

It was great. But there one or two were... eh... Disadvantages. How take a trip to the bathroom. It was not an easy thing. From the bedroom you climbed two flights of steps, went to evade staggered on the paving stones on the road, passing goats, then crashed into the former stable.

Saddened by my wife lack of carefree Gypsy temperament, agreed the I in the builders call. And that's when our problems started.

A puzzle, which developed in the course of centuries is our Pueblo. Six other properties abut my home and garden. The neighbor is sleeping on my bathroom and her living room is under my kitchen. So, make structural changes, you need not so much a generator as a diplomat, who is handy with bricks and mortar.

He has the key role of the negotiations with neighbouring countries. Personal relationships are all. It is therefore advisable, employ a local – he knows everyone and their families.

First name will also be he conditions with the people in the Town Hall. So, he will know how far you can extend the building codes.

Meet our crumbling and renewing roofs elected we Pablo, happy, GNOME-like fellow, charged less than the other generators. We found out for good reason - later.

If the building permit by came, I saw that it the extension mentioned a window and little else precious. So I queried Pablo.

"Hombre, you want the town hall with unimportant details to make?" Would you pay ridiculous an architect, which can draw you to the whole place down? No? "So let's get on with the job."

He and his men met the House as a whirlwind bashing from old soils and cover, smashing through walls whitewash sealed, mud and stone. The building was shaking, but I thought Pablo must know what he did. He also was a AlbaƱil (Masons).

Finally, after months of work, done dust and chaos, when the job was neither we nor the builders of the sight of another, could tolerate. We sat back a new era of convenience enjoy.

Then, we noticed that the floors that we asked a few inches to be raised, be they were below more headroom on same old. "Forgotten", explains Pablo.

And then it rained. Water poured all over the place. Pablo turn no hair. All new roofs as they were, he told us. He said all its roofs. It turned out like a sieve, the roof leaked, because he had overlaps the protective strip asphalt the wrong way.

As we pushed to avoid dripping rainwater in a corner, I offered my wife obvious comfort: "It's like camping."

As long as man has been around, he has always found a way to transport himself and the things that he needs from one location to another. Transportation is essential to trade and travel, whether we live in a big city or a small town, U.S.A. We entrust our livelihood, our food supply and even our social lives to it. The wheel and combustible engine were 2 of man's most important technological developments. We are heavily dependent on them still to go from one destination to the other.

New York State plays a key role in the nation's economy. For this reason, millions travel to New York using its transportation system when they get there to access employment and financial opportunities.

Here is a perfect example:

For the millions of commuters who travel daily to access business and investment opportunities, rush hour is a frightening scenario as key roadways and bridges are jam-packed with cars, trucks, motorcycles and buses, inching their way through bumper to bumper traffic. The overwhelming congestion of vehicles and passengers snakes everywhere. It can often take an aggravating hour or two to get to one place in just one borough.

Millions of motorists dread this daily commute while many are resigned to accept gridlock as a way of life. One can definitely say that the time that angry and frustrated motorists spend in traffic congestion has tripled or quadrupled over the years. Not to mention the gas that is wasted and the damage that is inflicted on our environment from vehicle emissions. Wasted fuel consumption resulting from the congestion of traffic has put most of its commuters in financial turmoil, many of whom are already struggling over ballooning home and healthcare costs.

Let's not forget to mention the subway. Train after train rumble their way into the station to be welcomed by an interminable barrier of commuters lined up on the platform. The crush of commuters make a mad dash to the train, pushing and elbowing their way. After a few seconds the train doors slam shut, leaving the unlucky ones behind. Some frustrated passengers fly, trying to push the doors open j-u-s-t far enough to wriggle their way inside before the train begins to move. If the train is a local it will continue to stop and pick up more passengers along the way, thus intensifying the unbearable crowding. Ill-humored, standing passengers are crushed together like sardines in a tin can with no room to fall if the train should suddenly stop.

This situation exists year-round as New Yorkers and tourists swarm about, seeking out beaches, parks and other recreational areas looking for a way to unwind. Here and there, stranded motorists along the highway stand beside their cars in the sweltering, dizzying heat, worsening the weekend obstruction filled with thrill seekers. Once the transfer of vehicles takes place, desperate motorists fly away. They frantically search for a gas station, only to find themselves once again trapped in an enormous column of 50 to 100 cars inching their way to the pumps hoping that the gas won't run out.

Even the air is congested with airplanes, departing and arriving in near collisions over populated areas. Everywhere there is congestion, clustered merging traffic entering airports from main arteries often causing passengers to report late for their flights. Fliers are getting fed up with the spiraling air fares and poor quality of service. They are totally disgusted with long lines at the check in, security, flight delays and incompetent baggage handling. As for finding your luggage... good luck! The worst part of traveling by air are the cancellations due to bad weather conditions, the grounding of airplanes with faulty wiring or other safety hazards leaving thousands of travelers stranded. If the frazzled flier is dissatisfied, imagine the unhappy investors agonizing over sagging profits. Many passengers are forced to turn to ground travel to get to their destination within the country. The railways and buses are all struggling to cope with more travelers than their carrying capacity. All forms of transport rely on fuel, which is being consumed at an alarming rate. The rising price of fuel will raise fares and create a reduction in air and surface travel, forcing many to adjust their current lifestyles in anticipation of the coming shortages.

The Federal Government as well as State and local Officials are frustrated as they try to find solutions and accommodate the increasing demands of traffic, whether on local streets or highways. Many of the roads and bridges that were built years ago have aged to the point of needing major repairs or complete replacement, taking priority over any newly suggested road project. New York State has been urged to adopt a "fix-it first" approach to protect its transportation assets. The overwhelming costs of eliminating traffic congestion at hundreds of stressed areas throughout the state only adds more of a burden to financially strained budgets and to the taxpayer's dilemma.

Almost everything we use and eat is transported by truck or train, both of which depend on abundant supplies of cheap diesel fuel. As gas and diesel fuel prices continue to climb, the price of everything will increase accordingly. All food supplies and products that are transported from a distance become far more expensive due to the increased cost of transporting them. Eventually this situation will create changes in people's eating habits and add to mass unemployment.

New Yorkers and the entire nation love to drive their own cars instead of using public transportation, even though New York is perhaps the most public transit-rich city in the United States. Between the cost of insurance, maintenance, tolls, gas consumption and depreciation, driving a car would not necessarily be cheaper, nevertheless, to a motorist, a car represents independence.

New York City's traffic congestion is already in an intolerable state; just imagine what an additional million cars will do.

The New York City Advisory Panel recently convened and came to the conclusion that if mass changes are not made to the New York City transportation system and soon, the infrastructure of the state is in deep trouble, the state economy will collapse and New York Citizens will see a serious decrease in their quality of life, all because there is too much congestion, too much gas is being consumed, and the transportation system itself is completely uncoordinated. Agencies must be consolidated to be more efficient, the infrastructure of roads must be replaced, and funding must be found to pay for all of this. The problem is, they really have no idea as to a solution to this huge problem.

As for public transportation, not a day goes by, in which there isn't some mention that the trains and buses are never on time. They constantly break down, leaving transit riders distressed. Let's face it, we are in a national crisis, gasoline and diesel is freely available for now, but is becoming more and more expensive by the day. If prices keep spiraling, people will not be able to drive. If people can't drive they won't be able to work. This will affect the overall American economy.

"Under these conditions, affluent people are going to buy downsized hybrids and the rest of us will probably have to fall back on public transportation as the most energy efficient (that is, least expensive) way to get from Point A to point B."

It is obvious that the transportation problem in New York is not destined to find a permanent solution. Now that we have a clearer picture of the current transportation crisis and the greater one forthcoming, let's take a backward glance at New York City's public travel history as it transpired over the last few centuries, evolving inevitably into what it is today. In order to enlighten you on this subject matter, I have researched and compiled a list of selected historical facts which are documented regarding the development and growth of public transportation and its infrastructure. I have arranged the entries chronologically. Please note that the growth of the city during the twentieth century has been phenomenal. Manhattan, the most popular borough, has always been the financial center of the United States. This is where the greatest passenger traffic movement originates, develops and is distributed to the neighboring boroughs. This is where the overwhelming congestion of vehicles moves everywhere and at the same time nowhere, strangled within the narrow, confined limits of the island, thus creating transportation problems far too difficult to solve. Through this chronology you will observe how city officials keep making every effort possible to accommodate the demanding outcries of the populace for an improved transportation system.

I hope, this list will prove grist for the mill of your curious mind. At least, it should give you something to think about while you're stuck in traffic!

Berlin: A city change

Like everything in life, cities are changing. War, politics, migration, economics, to prevent technological advances, and climate change, that every city of which are really the same. Berlin is no exception and has probably seen in the last century than any urban areas in Europe more changes. The town developed century groups of small settlements that come together. Later it the Capitol would be expanded from Prussia and on during the industrial revolution. Berlin is now the Capitol of Germany, a country whose current boundaries were established only in the last 100 years. Their impact on the city have made since the first world war and NAZI rule. Germany's defeat in World War II culminated in the battle to 1945 in Berlin. Berlin was then under the winner allies divided: the US, UK, France and the USSR. In the 1960s, communism died from Berlin and the Berlin wall was erected to stop East Berlin, which had lower standard of living than their Western counterparts from emerging from the "iron curtain" of the Russian influence.

The Gestapo officers enforced, this and many human rights violated, until the German reunification in 1989. On 9 November 1989 the Berlin Wall fell and Germany have been in scenes of the celebration. Where leaves, so that the second largest city in the twenty-first century? An important feature of the modern Berlin is his love of graffiti and murals. Remains of the Berlin wall, which still stand were in the year after it was painted. Peaceful images of pigeons and freedom can be seen here. A section in English and says: "many small who make many small many small things can do change the face of the world." The side of a building has painted with a few copulating in addition to a balloon, I love Berlin reads. There is even a combined German and Israeli flag on the wall. In addition to the wall is a thriving party and fine art scene in Berlin. West Berlin tends to attract an older and more affluent audience. The eastern half of the city has a picture grittier, cooler, and this is where many artists due to the low-rent and a creative atmosphere with residence was have. Photographic gallery c/O Berlin is located on the Oranienburgerstrasse, a street full of galleries and artists, as is the famous art Tacheles squat. Kreuzberg, a very Turkish area has changed from very bad to West Berlin to a cultural Mecca. Continue to change the city. Rising house prices in East Berlin cause to grab many artistically urban spaces gentrification.

People are talking about Berlin's cheap and edgy past and areas such as Mitte, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain have expensive clothes in the hub gradually change was shops and organic restaurants. Some of the galleries, which were not as well established had to close because of rising costs. It will be interesting to see how Berlin changed in the next century. 5 Things I hate about your holiday money

I love going on a vacation, and I look forward to my annual break as much as everyone else. If you travel abroad, but it is a whole series of planning and preparation, particularly on the financial front. The experienced and well-prepared travelers can suffer harassment, the frustration and outright mess, if it dealing with foreign currency therefore. I know; I have seen them all in my time. Here, my personal top 5 vacation gripes are money.

(1) Stomach on the current has to this moment your card in an ATM in some god-forsaken, foreign airport and question top of the list you if you have me be, whether you see it again and again. What would be fun, spend all week trying to the 30 euro in your Pocket back holiday are left over from last year!

2. Foreign exchange cards. They are useful, I have to admit. But as I hate to remember must a number new PIN, password, user ID & security use questions my FX card. I'm doomed on vacation; I should relax, not to do a flowering examination. There are only, especially so many of these things can remind a person when they get on a bisschen…

3. Having to my good solid British British Shorthair from my new stash of euro/dollar/what any weed out. Colour-coded wallet with this procedure much help, I think. But no matter how busy I get organized try, there is always a troublesome Maverick coin that ends up in the wrong pile and is me in all sorts of difficulties. They present typical British driver with a two euro coin, try and see what happens…You you will be back on the pavement, before you even know what hit.

4. Landings. Ever endured a stop in a country with a different currency from your home country and your country? Travel in Europe in the days before the euro was invented, was this more often. What is when stuck somewhere for an hour or use to and desperately needs a drink of water/coffee/to the toilet?

It happened to me years ago, when inter-railing in Europe. Emerging of toilets on a railway platform on the Gard-du-Nord after a necessary pee, I committed the heinous crime, the Concierge tip not. Now if she had been British, she would just have given me a dirty look and was doing tutting noises. But as a Frenchwoman, she actually gave chase and haunts me right below the platform and almost on the train. My but, that old lady could do. And shouting. According to. How shameful. If I had more presence of mind I would have fitted only her with a British coin. This is d ' what the French call l ' ESPRIT escalier; happened to me all the time.

(5) In these days I'm more organized and have to spend a little more money, but I still get in trouble. A common problem on holiday today is the name of notes in the ATM. When I finally make it to my location and find a working show cash what machine? I would ask my 100 euros. Only two-note it spits out both 50 s. All I want is a small glass of white wine. The waiter sees me presenting daggers when I pay him account with 50 Euro 3.50. Maybe I should stay in this bar and get blind drunk, it would be much easier.

And one thing I love…

No more Italian lire! In recent years in Italy holiday, I found it hard to get the Lira in the handle. To be honest, I was never quite sure whether I buy the item would cost £ 1.00, £ 10.00 or £ 100.00. Rather than rack-my brain to find out, it was how much 10,000 lira in pound sterling, at the end just got a whole lot easier, that best hope or simply take a chance. Rather like playing Russian roulette with your money to spend. Thank God for the euro!

No journey that will take alone in a taxi should be women.

If women make a taxi use, they must not, keep in mind, without getting friends with them is. Most taxi drivers are however respectable professionals in one or two unusual that can try to make sexual advances, especially if you had a few drinks could run. For most tourism cities taxis are easily by their color, tags and models to identify. Accept you no trips by unmarked vehicles, unless you have arranged for the journey through a private car service.

It is more difficult for taxi drivers to cheat you, if you know exactly where you are going. Good ideas are handy with a mobile phone and tourist map. Before you accept "Links", special stops and detours, make sure that you know you need to eventually go where you are, where you came from and where it is. If you are supposed to go to the airport, but you discover that you go in the opposite direction you ahead and out of the cabin as soon as possible. Yet can still to pay you, what are expected to also always fare on the meter is. It is safe to go ahead and to pay the driver as it to each other over a few bucks effort.

If no taxi, the driver under the influence of alcohol appears to be; the taxi driver doesn't seem to any local spot know; The car looks like it is too old to as used a taxi or the car in a State of disrepair is. Traffic behavior and local road culture be aware. Pay attention to reckless driving as obvious drowsiness, excessive speed, blatant disregard for the traffic control equipment and inattention to drive. If the operator controls ruthlessly, get off safely at the first opportunity. If you think that you are in danger, they say something, the taxi driver. Not with other passengers, which seem to be drunk or on drugs, distracted driving excessively tired or irrational. Ride only in taxis with safety belts work in the back seat. Avoid, night-time trips especially in country areas.

Look what is happening around you and not let itself be distracted by Smalltalk, people sell things, good looking foreign or anything else. This means that you let not people who come to you. Taxi ranks are probably pretty crowded, so pick pockets sometimes work at these booths. Maintain good personal space within be so aware and know what is happening around you, and where the people are.

Before we should be on board the taxi, the general appearance and the condition of the car, you to your desired destination be Immaculate, outside and inside. It sounds like a joke again, but it is definitely not wise to get cab that looks like an Rattle trap on a taxi. Their lives could be at serious risk, in contrast to official certification, which often is the result of a corrupt government offices.

You will find a Venice more taxi for yourself online about benefits of the setting. Knowledge more than only as an excellent taxi, as Venice can help particularly beneficial for everyone could be in the long term.

First week mean way as an adult

During high school was not much time for fun. I lived with my grandparents. They were very strict, with old old-fashioned ideas about what I should do. While their rules and regulations at the time were aggravating, I learned much more than I without them would have.

I was required to study and do my homework for three hours every day. My learning curve was always on my clarinet with an hour of practice to comply with. Only after all, I was able to do some free time.

My grandparents made me when my senior year of high school in the living room our annual debate about how would change the rules for me. This year I would may to my break to go shock and amazement, on a week-long holiday with my friends for spring. This would be the first time, I would stay more than a night without supervision.

Our last year seemed slower than others passed. Refer friends and I planned our trip almost constantly in our minds. As the week of spring break grew closer, we have decided our journey take a beach resort in the Florida Keys page. We booked a suite with two bedrooms, a kitchen, and our own private dock on the water. My grandparents agreed for the hotel to pay is that this was my first real trip as an adult. Since we had the budget, we wanted all over the top. Our room had an extravagant Cedar spa directly at the dock.

As our plane arrived and we the taxi, which we began our goal, our hearts, on board drive. The excitement seemed till we reached the hotel. The reality of the figures of taxi driver brought enough to the Earth, long us, check in at least in our suite.

The room was just grand as had it looked as though we it, books on my computer home. There were chocolate on the pillow, even the toilet paper was folded at the end. As we explore all the features of this House for the week, we conversed which of the many available, activities, initially to try, and we agreed we try out the hot tub, while we made our plans.

In the course of the week we indulge in some of the most exciting things that we ever imagined. The view over the clear blue ocean hang gliding is something that I will never forget. What a contrast from the mountains of Midwest, where we are.

Our journey seemed even faster when it started to an abrupt end. The taxi ride back to the airport was nearly silent us each reveled in unforgettable memories of the week. To go into the aircraft, it seemed finite, we felt that a week could be as fun as this, that we just experienced.

When I started to talk about the journey to my grandparents, they understood. Did you know how big this journey for me, a well-earned break would be previously. Now everyday life is not so bad, can know what it bring rewards.

A holiday experience Egypt

Our best holiday must still be our Egypt family vacation last winter.

It was freezing cold in the United Kingdom and the promise of warm weather and a little light relief from the dark nights was irresistible. But offer holidays, how soon find out, Egypt much more than a dose of winter sun.

We ended up in Cairo, a car stuffed, chaotic city pitted with hidden corners and bazaars, with heat and waste, thickness and marked by friendly locals and frustrating questions what we would like to buy. Our hotel was a bit like an oasis then: smooth and white with sparkling pool and plenty of space for tranquil customs but the madness outside feel waved.

We on our first day to see the great pyramids of Giza. You are outside of the city, majestic - a proof of design and early civilization - the man and almost completely inappropriate against the modern skyline of sloppy. From the Egyptian Museum, we held back a little dated for the incredible contained treasures. Like everyone else, we have a beeline for Tutankhamun.

The next day we headed from the young Pharaoh to see Tomb in the Valley of the Kings. This was more like it. Away from the chaos of the city, this spectacular site is incredible. Large in scale, might feel like an Explorer, hike in the middle of the high pillars and the hieroglyphics of this magical place.

But my running was a total memory of the journey and the reason why our family vacation was Egypt of one of my favorites, our Felucca journey along the Nile. A Felucca is no cruise but a traditional wooden boat, long and slender in length with a single deck with no cabins on which sit and stay and watch the world go by.

As of the day you see another side of Egypt, one less page from the busy city life and tourists seen. We saw farmers tend to the fields for the floods, high and low tide wait as they have for centuries. We saw smiling waving children in dry desert past quiet oases and pass date palms. And as the night the sky in a million stars was opened. Brighter and shinier than almost anything which I have seen before. And we drove along the great river and slept as researchers on deck. An adventure for the mothers and the children!
